2016 Think Brick Awards – Kevin Borland Masonry Award Announced
Announced at Think Brick Australia’s Gala Dinner at the Ivy Ballroom in Sydney on Friday, 5 August, twenty-five outstanding projects from across Australia have been recognized in the 2016 Think Brick Awards, Australia’s richest design awards. This year marks a decade of the Think Brick Awards, a program that celebrates excellence in the use of clay brick, concrete masonry and roof tiles by Australia’s best architects and designers.
The Kevin Borland Masonry Award rewards innovation and craftsmanship in the use of concrete masonry in residential and commercial projects. The Award is named after Kevin Borland, a prominent Australian architect, who had a great love of structural and formal innovation in architecture.
While all of the finalists in 2016 eloquently demonstrated the metamorphosis from material beginnings to masterpiece, this year’s winner of the Kevin Borland Masonry Award was Hoddle House by Freadman White, who received a $10,000 cash prize.
Hoddle House in Melbourne is an alteration and addition to an existing 1930s brick dwelling and a 1970s addition. The elegant project celebrates masonry brick – its tough yet velvety, shimmering form playing with scales and proportions to present an unobtrusive yet confident addition.
The Awards jury made the following comment about the winner:
“The architects were really clever in their selection with the concrete masonry in this project. The qualities of the concrete block they’ve chosen bring almost a suede effect and a lovely softness to what is essentially a very restrained house.”
