HB156-2002 SEGMENTAL CONCRETE REINFORCED SOIL RETAINING WALLS -
Design and Construction Guide
(February 2002 - A joint publication CMAA/Standards Australia)

This guide provides a comprehensive approach to the design of segmental concrete reinforced soil retaining walls based on:
  • The design and construction rules set out in AS 4678
  • An analysis method developed in the United States and published by the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), and modified in part by the Concrete Masonry Association of Australia (CMAA) to fit Australian practice and the Australian Standard.

The scope of this guide is limited to the design of reinforced soil structures up to 6 metres high, consisting of concrete segmental facing units and geosynthetic grids, with a maximum wall slope of 15° from vertical. This guide does not apply to seawalls, water-retaining structures, unusual ground conditions (such as soft ground, landslips, steep sides or deeply inclined gullies) or to walls subject to sustained cyclic loading.

The guide includes:
  • A description of the principal features of the Australian Standard
  • A description of the analysis method
  • A comprehensive site investigation check list
  • Design examples which demonstrate the use of the Australian Standard and analysis method

Both the abovementioned publications are available from Standards Australia - www.standards.com.au.
