The 5th Biennial Golden
Trowel Award was held in Newcastle at Hunter Institute of TAFE on Sunday 16
September to Tuesday 18 September 2001. This event is held by the CMAA to encourage excellence among apprentices and recognise the skills of young people in the blocklaying trades. The competition is a team event, with teams consisting of a year two apprentice, a year three apprentice and their teacher for technical support. The teacher may assist in setting out and dry layout of product but the laying of blocks, cutting, joint finishing etc must all be done by the students. The competition was a great success with all 9 TAFE bricklaying schools in NSW attending as well as a team from Brick Industry Training School - Redfern; Holmesglen TAFE - Victoria; Torrens Valley TAFE - South Australia; and Central West College - Western Australia - 13 teams in all. See list of competitors. The competition was won by the Granville TAFE team: Johann Zarb Student Lindon Dean Student Greg Todman Teacher The event was run to a tight schedule with leisure activities to wind-down for the competitors on the last afternoon. The climax of the event was the Presentation Dinner when the winners were announced and trophies presented by Robin Shreeve, Deputy Director General, TAFE NSW. All 39 competitors from the 13 teams worked tirelessly in their efforts to win the coveted trophy - The CMAA Golden Trowel Award. Blue Circle Southern Cement was the major sponsor of the event, with numerous other sponsors willing to support this worthwhile competition. See list of sponsors.
