PRESIDENT'S REPORT

May 2001

During calendar year 2000 the Concrete Masonry Association of Australia continued to work and expand the national and state markets for a better future. The CMAA communicates design information, technical advice and product advantages to architects, engineers, landscape architects, educators and local, state and national bodies.

The CMAA and its membership hold a clear vision and mission –
increased acceptance of the concrete masonry industry’s products and to extend and improve the masonry market.

Some of the
major activities of the CMAA during 2000 supporting the industry’s vision and mission included:
  • Representing the industry at some 38 Standards Australia meetings on 15 active main code committees and 12 sub-committees.

  • Representing the industry on other regulatory bodies/publications:
    • Building Code of Australia (BCA) Class 1 and Class 10 Buildings Housing Provisions
    • Building Code of Australia (BCA) Class 2 to Class 9 Buildings
    • Australian Domestic Construction Manuals (ADCM) Manuals – Qld, NSW, Vic (SA and WA to come)
    • Austroads Pavement Design - A Guide to the Structural Design of Road Pavements
    • Austroads – Guide to Bituminous Surfacings
  • Maintaining a national industry-wide technical enquiry service.

  • Convening three meetings of the CMAA Technical Committee which is charged with the technical responsibility for the industry, eg Codes and Standards, technical publications etc.

  • Publishing the following concrete masonry publications:
    • Detailing and Construction of Concrete Masonry Buildings
    • Concrete Flag Pavements – Design and Construction Guide
    • Concrete Masonry Structures – Cleaning and Maintenance
    • Concrete Masonry Handbook
  • Creating and maintaining a website for the CMAA to disseminate information to members and the general public. The website has five sections:
    • Technical Information - This section has free technical publications and data sheets as well as providing information about for-sale items with instructions on how to obtain them.
    • Concrete Masonry News - This section has regular articles added and has superseded the CMAA Newsletter.
    • Member Companies - As well as having details of our members and their contact details, this section has a members-only area, accessed by password. Members are able to download free, from this area, technical information that is for sale to the general public.
    • About CMAA and Contacts - Information on the Association and contact details
    • Allied Industry Links - Links to allied industries, such as the Concrete Institute of Australia and the Cement and Concrete Association of Australia.
  • Participating in some 22 seminars/presentations including national capital city seminars.

  • Regular liaison and co-ordination of the State Promotional Committees.

The results of all this work and activity (plus others too numerous to list) are not directly measurable – nor should they be. The activities are geared towards enhancing the generic technical and image base of the industry as a whole in a global effort to maintain, support and increase the use of concrete masonry products.

The CMAA is staffed by a small team,
namely:
Alan Pearson, Executive Director
Tiere Morgan, Administration Manager
Wilma Robinson, Administrative Officer (part-time)

Their professional focus, dedication and belief have continued to produce exceptional results with minimal resources, I thank them for their efforts.

The contributions of a small number of consultants, Rod Johnston (Quasar), Ron Marshall (Ron Marshall Consulting), Brian Shackel (University of NSW) deserve recognition for their participation in key CMAA objectives.

Also, the efforts and support of the sponsoring members, their employees and the State Promotion groups is essential to the success of the CMAA and the support by all of these people is very much recognised and appreciated by all the CMAA staff.

Focus on external issues, industry co-operation and vision will see the CMAA and our industry continue into the future.

Glenn Whiteford
President.
