The Bathurst team is winner of the CMAA’s 8th National Golden Trowel Awards, held at TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute – Wollongong Campus on the 6 and 7 August 2007. The team from TAFE NSW Western Institute-Bathurst comprised Nigel Croke - Stage I, Dale Rogers - Stage II, brick/blocklaying students, and Peter Moore - brick/blocklaying teacher. Bathurst was one of 15 teams from across Australia competing for the prestigious Golden Trowel Award – there were 9 teams from NSW and one each from ACT, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. (See competitors below) The biennial two-day national blocklaying competition encourages excellence among apprentices while recognising the valuable skills of young people in a skill shortage trade. Teams participating in the competition were given a project brief that required intricate details, such as embedding the letters CMAA into a curved wall, and using specified materials to complete the project within a limited time frame. Each team was judged by industry experts according to a predetermined marking scale. Bricklaying Teacher Raymond Mouthaan from TAFE NSW - Hunter Institute and coordinator of judging said,” The marking scale involves ten different elements that include measurement, plumbing, alignment, joint finishing and the overall appearance of the project.” “The competition was very close due to the high standards exhibited by each team but the Bathurst Team was the definite winner,” said Raymond. Illawarra Institute Director, Dianne Murray and David Collins, General Manager State Training Services, Department of Education and Training, presented the Awards at a gala dinner on the evening of 7 August, in Wollongong. Dianne Murray said ”The Golden Trowel competition is about vocational education and training providers working together with industry to offer opportunities that build skills in trade areas such as brick and blocklaying. Competitions such as these equip students to enter and engage with industry immediately and effectively.” “Hosting the Golden Trowel competition at Wollongong Campus enabled the ‘trademark’ signature foundations of bonding, building and cooperation within the brick and blocklaying industry to flourish and strengthen,” added Dianne Murray. The CMAA NSW Promotional Committee organised the event in cooperation with TAFE NSW Illawarra Institute – members supplied blocks for the tasks as well as giving their time to judge the competition.
